O museo atópase no antigo mosteiro de Santo Domingo de Betanzos (século XVII-XVIII), e inaugurouse en 1983. Nese mesmo edificio atópanse o Arquivo Municipal de Betanzos e a Biblioteca Municipal A. Castelao de Betanzos. No museo edítase a publicación cultural Anuario Brigantino.
