Segundo o IGE en 2014 tiña 3.991 habitantes, cunha densidade de poboación de 28 hab./km². O seu xentilicio é «mindoniense». Mondoñedo ten sé episcopal compartida con Ferrol. O bispo da diocese de Mondoñedo-Ferrol reside alternativamente nunha e noutra cidade.
